IPOH: The trial of a senior police officer charged with the murder of a secondary school student in Taman Jati, Meru Raya, here last year will begin on Nov 4 this year.
Ipoh High Court Justice Datuk Bhupindar Singh Gurcharan Singh Preet has set the trial of Deputy Supt Mohd Nazri Abdul Razak, 44, to be held over 30 days.
The dates are from Nov 4 to 8, Nov 11 to 15, Dec 2 to 6, Dec 9 to 13 this year and Jan 6 to 10, Jan 13 to 17 next year.
Earlier during the proceedings, the accused was charged again under Section 302 of the Penal Code and he claimed trial.
He was alleged to have murdered Muhammad Zaharif Affendi Muhd Zamrie, 17, at Jalan Taman Jati, near SMK Jati, on Dec 15 last year between 12.05pm and 12.40pm.
Mohd Nazri was first charged at the Magistrate’s Court here on Dec 18 last year.
The prosecution had earlier this year requested for the case to be transferred to the High Court.
Deputy public prosecutor Afzainizam Abdul Aziz said about 60 witnesses would be called during the trial.
He said the prosecution team would need at least a month to finalise the witness list.
“We will need to go through (the list) first. There may be more or fewer witnesses,” he said when met after the proceedings.
Meanwhile, Mohd Nazri’s counsel, Jacky Loi, said they filed a motion for the accused to be allowed bail.
However, a decision has yet to be made, as both the prosecution and defence were required to exhaust the exchanging of affidavits first.
Justice Bhupindar set July 1 for mention and submission of documents.
The prosecution team also consisted of Saiful Akmal Mod Said and Nasrul Hadi Abdul Ghani while the defence team included counsel Lim Chi Chau and M. Kuhan.
Also present were lawyers Yasmin Khalid and Amira Najwafitri Amir Arif, who held a watching brief on behalf of the victim’s family.
The late teenager’s brother, Zarul Fitri Muhd Zamrie, and his uncle Abdul Razak Judin were also present during the proceedings.
