Negri’s Undang of Rembau laid to rest

SEREMBAN: The Undang of Rembau, Datuk Muhamad Sharip Othman (pic), one of four influential chieftains in Negri Sembilan, has passed away. He was 83.

He was laid to rest at Kampung Mungkal Sepri cemetery. He had served as Undang Luak Rembau for 25 years after he was proclaimed as Undang in November 1998.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Aminuddin Harun said the state government was indebted to Muhamad Sharip for his contributions to Negri Sembilan.

“We have lost an important person who had served with distinction for 25 years as Undang.

“Our administration expresses our condolences to his family on his passing,” he said after chairing the state exco meeting here yesterday. Aminuddin and members of his administration later paid their respects to the late Muhamad Sharip.

Apart from the Undang of Rembau, the other three chieftains are the Undang of Sungei Ujong, Undang of Jelebu and Undang of Johol.

The four Undang act as advisers to the Yang di-Pertuan Besar of Negri Sembilan Tuanku Muhriz Tuanku Munawir.

They are also involved, among other duties, in choosing the candidates to become the state Ruler.

The four Undang have different titles which reflect the uniqueness of the Adat Perpatih, a matrilineal system practised only in Negri Sembilan.
