KLANG: A motorist abandoned his car and jumped into a monsoon drain to save himself from a mob that was coming after him following an accident.
According to a statement issued by South Klang OCPD ACP Cha Hoong Fong, the man's misadventure started at about 1.00pm on Friday (May 17).
The man, who was driving a car from Shah Alam, heading towards Jalan Kebun here, grazed against a motorcycle while on the road.
"An argument ensued and the motorcyclist threatened to damage the car," ACP Cha said.
He added that the driver sped away in fear and headed towards Jalan Raja Nong, with the motorcyclist giving chase.
The car then grazed another motorcycle, and instead of stopping, the driver continued fleeing and headed towards Sungai Jati with both motorcyclists giving chase.
To make matters worse, the car rammed another car from the rear at the Sungai Jati junction.
Frightened, the driver reversed his car and turned into another road and started driving against the flow of traffic.
While driving against the flow of traffic, the driver grazed against several other vehicles and stopped after hitting a lorry parked at the side of the road.
"The driver alighted from the car and ran to save himself as he felt his safety was at stake because many members of the public were chasing him.
"He then jumped into a (monsoon) drain to save himself," added ACP Cha.
According to ACP Cha, several people threw objects at the driver as well as assaulted him with a coconut leaf branch.
The man managed to hide under a bridge and was rescued by a patrol car that arrived at the scene.
He was then brought to the police station for further investigation.
"So far ten reports of road accidents have been lodged at the South Klang traffic police station.
"The case is being investigated under Section 42(1) Road Transport Act 1987," said ACP Cha.
He advised members of the public not to take matters into their hands as it can cause injury to others.
