Newborn found in Pantai Dalam not murdered, say cops

KUALA LUMPUR: The newborn baby, who was found abandoned at an apartment area in Pantai Dalam, was not murdered, say police.

Instead, the post-mortem showed that the baby girl died due to injuries inflicted by animals after she was dumped.

Brickfields OCPD Asst Comm Ku Mashariman Ku Mahmood said police believe the suspect who dumped the baby was an outsider and not an apartment resident.

"We have recorded the statements of six individuals, including the one who found the baby and other witnesses.

"We conclude the baby was dumped by someone who was not from the area as the residents did not remember seeing any of their fellow residents being pregnant," he told a press conference at the Brickfields district police headquarters on Tuesday (May 21).

The police are investigating further to identify and track down the suspect, he said.

"We have to dig deeper to catch the culprit," he said.

It was reported that the body of a newborn baby girl was found in the parking lot of an apartment in Pantai Dalam here.

ACP Ku Mashariman had said the police received a call at around 9.33am on Friday about the incident which occurred at the Putra Ria Apartment.

"The body was found by the apartment manager.

"An ambulance was dispatched to the scene at around 10.25am and the baby was pronounced dead by medical staff," he said in a statement on Friday.

He said the body was taken to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for post-mortem.

"Our initial findings revealed that the baby's gender is female and there is a visible wound on the left cheek.

"The umbilical cord was still intact which leads us to believe that the baby was a newborn," he said, adding that the baby was believed to be of foreign descent.

He said the case has been classified as concealment of birth by secret disposal of dead body.

Those with information on the case can contact the police hotline at 03-2115 9999 or go to the nearest police station.
