Women's representation in politics still lacking, says Dr Wee

PETALING JAYA: Despite their many achievements in other spheres, women still only have 26% representation in politics, says Dr Datuk Seri Wee Ka Siong.

"Additionally, the most common portfolios held by women ministers are family, children and youth," the MCA president said in a Facebook post on Wednesday (May 22).

He is currently attending the Asian Leadership Conference (ACL) 2024 in Seoul, South Korea.

“Jacinda Ardern made history by becoming the youngest female head of government in the world when she was elected prime minister of New Zealand at the age of 37 in 2017.

"From her experiences on her political journey, she shared with us how she dealt with challenges, criticism and crises, keeping her focus on her responsibilities to leave a legacy of kindness through her leadership,” he wrote.

Dr Wee, who is Ayer Hitam MP, added that he attended an executive dialogue with Ardern during the conference.

He described the session with Ardern, involving a small group of participants, as refreshing.

Meanwhile, Dr Wee also met with Thai businessman and former politician Pita Limjaroenrat.

"Despite the persecution and challenges he faced, especially in his bid to become the Prime Minister of Thailand, the popular and charismatic politician spoke optimistically about the future of Thailand and Asean," he wrote in another Facebook post.

Dr wee than added that he looked forward to exchanging views with more new faces and young leaders at this conference.
