GEORGE TOWN: Sungai Bakap assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff passed away yesterday after spending more than three weeks in hospital.
The 56-year-old first-term assemblyman breathed his last at Hospital Seberang Jaya intensive care unit (ICU) due to an inflammation of the stomach.
Muafakat Nasional chairman Tan Sri Annuar Musa shared the news and expressed condolences to friends and family.
“Sungai Bakap assemblyman Nor Zamri Latiff died at 1.38pm. I was informed about the news by his personal assistant,” he announced on social media.
In April, Nor Zamri was taken to Hospital Sungai Bakap due to an inflammation of the stomach. He was transferred to Hospital Seberang Jaya on the same day.
The Nibong Tebal PAS division chief contested the Sungai Bakap state seat in the 15th state election last August, beating Pakatan Harapan’s Nurhidayah Che Rus from PKR with a 1,563-vote majority.Nor Zamri, known among the locals as Zamri Roti Arab, contested in GE14 in the Sungai Acheh seat but lost to the then PKR’s Zulkifli Ibrahim. In that contest, Nor Zamri garnered only 2,383 votes. He held several positions in the party before he assumed the Nibong Tebal PAS division chief post in 2020.
His funeral was held at Masjid Sungai Acheh yesterday.
Nor Zamri is survived by his wife Musalmah Yusop and six children.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow said a notification on the vacancy of the Sungai Bakap seat would be sent to the Election Commission today.
“The State Assembly Speaker has been informed regarding the matter and the state assembly secretary will notify the EC,” he told reporters after Nor Zamri’s burial at the Sungai Acheh Muslim Cemetery.
Chow, representing the state government, conveyed condolences to Nor Zamri’s family.
