Penang registers better SPM results for 2023


GEORGE TOWN: Penang recorded an improved grade point average (GPA) of 4.49 in 2023 compared to 4.60 in the SPM examination in 2022.

A total of 775 students scored straight As out of the 18,833 who sat for the exams in the state in 2023 compared to 688 in 2022.

Penang Education director Abdul Said Hussain said 15,655 of the 17, 237 (92.64%) students in government schools managed to get certificates compared to 90.21% in 2022.

"There has been considerable increase of the number of As in major subjects such as Accounting (42.45%), Mathematics (38.32%), Biology (29.95%), Bahasa Melayu (28.84%) and Chemistry (26.50%)," he said on Monday (May 27).

Abdul Said said five students scored excellent results, from SMK Al-Irhsad (11A+), SMK (L) Al-Mashoor (11A+) SMK (P) China (10A+), SMK Bukit Jambul (9A+) and SMK St Xavier's (9A+).
