Senior citizen loses nearly RM600,000 in lottery scam

SEREMBAN: A senior citizen has been duped of almost RM600,000 in a lottery scam in Nilai near here.

Nilai deputy OCPD Deputy Supt Mat Ghani Lateh said the victim lodged a report on Sunday (May 26) claiming that he was approached by two men selling lottery tickets on Dec 9.

"The victim said on Dec 18, the two men told him that he had won RM3.7mil in the lottery draw.

"However, the victim was told that he had to make payment to 'legitimise' his winnings and he agreed," he said in a statement on Monday (May 27).

DSP Mat Ghani said the victim then transferred RM594,000 into several bank accounts in 62 transactions.

The man only realised he had been scammed when he failed to get his lottery winnings.

DSP Mat Ghani said an investigation paper has been opened and the case was being probed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating.

"We would like to advise the public to be wary of such schemes and to always check with the authorities before parting with their money," he added.
