BEIJING: Malaysia and China relations mark their golden anniversary today, a relationship which is a testament to an enduring friendship.
The two countries will toast their 50 years of friendship that has seen both nations standing by each other throughout tough economic times and the Covid-19 pandemic.
To mark the historic occasion, a luncheon will be hosted by China’s Vice-Premier Ding Xuexiang at Diaoyutai here.
This will be reciprocated by Malaysia with a gala dinner hosted by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.
Some 700 guests are expected to attend the dinner amid tight security, due to the magnitude of the event.
The guests, comprising government officials, business leaders and academicians, among others, will be treated to not just several sumptuous Malaysian dishes but also the nation’s rich cultural performances.

“There is much to celebrate. Both countries have gone through ups and downs together, sharing an enduring and lasting friendship. I have witnessed several meaningful agreements with educational institutions and Chinese firms, including companies for them to relocate their operations to Malaysia.
“This is more than just an official visit for me,” said Ahmad Zahid at a press conference yesterday.
Malaysia’s Ambassador to China Datuk Norman Muhamad described the gala dinner as a show of gratitude for the enduring friendship.
“It is a point of pride for Malaysia, especially when the historic day May 31, 1974, is an unforgettable day, which set new thinking and new processes at that time.
“It also opened up a door for China to Asean, contributing to the peace and stability of the region. This is important to all of us,” he said.
