PETALING JAYA: The safety of McDonald’s Malaysia employees is a priority, says McDonald’s Malaysia in response to the escalation of acts of vandalism against the franchise's outlets and signages nationwide.
In a statement on Saturday (June 1), McDonald's Malaysia managing director and local operating partner Datuk Azmir Jaafar said that recent incidents of restaurants being vandalised are a cause for concern.
“In addition to the vandalism, any acts of aggression towards our crew members and customers is deeply troubling.
“The safety of our employees, all of whom are our fellow Malaysians, is our utmost priority. Standing up for the plight of Palestinians in Gaza is important, but it should not come at the expense of harming fellow Malaysians," he said.
Azmir added that as a Muslim, he stands in solidarity with those in Gaza.
"We all feel a moral obligation to help within our means. As a 100% Muslim-owned business in Malaysia, our commitment to humanitarian causes is unwavering.
“We have consistently voiced our support for the victims in Palestine and have donated RM1mil to the Palestinian Humanitarian Fund.
"Additionally, our employees have collectively raised more than RM100,000 in donations to further aid those affected," Azmir said.
In a press conference on Friday (June 1), Selangor Police Chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said that the state police have received reports on seven cases of vandalism targeting fast food outlets that are believed to have links to the boycotts.
A couple in their twenties were arrested following investigations into a case in Kajang where stickers of an Israeli flag were pasted at a fast food outlet.
