JOHOR BARU: Three people were killed when their vehicle crashed into a trench along the Sultan Iskandar Highway.
Larkin Fire and Rescue Department operations commander Haizrul Rahmad said the victims are two women and a man aged between 28 and 35.
“The victims have been identified as Chu Wei Yean, 28, Aw Siew Chern, 35, and Chu Wan Rou, 31.
“The incident occurred at 7.20am on Saturday (June 1). The victims were travelling in an MPV which is believed to have crashed into the trench after the driver lost control of the vehicle,” he said in a statement.
All of the victims’ bodies have been recovered and all were pronounced dead at the scene.
“We deployed 12 personnel to the location with one fire truck, one rapid intervention motorcycle (RIM) unit, and one Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) van,” he added.
Johor Baru North deputy OCPD Supt Yusof Othman said that the police received a report regarding the incident at 8.11am on Saturday (June 1).
“All of the victims were inside an MPV driven by a 30-year-old woman from Bukit Indah heading towards Johor Baru.
“However, upon arriving at the location, the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the left side of the road and went into the trench.
“The water inside the trench was about three metres deep as the rain had just stopped,” he said in a statement here.
The driver, along with two other passengers, were pronounced dead at the location after suffering an internal injury, he added.
"The driver was driving with her 27-year-old brother and 35-year-old friend.
“All of the bodies have been removed by the Fire and Rescue Department,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road and Transport Act of 1987.
