Johor records 55% increase in commercial crime cases in May

JOHOR BARU: A total of 423 commercial crime cases involving more than RM15mil worth of losses were recorded statewide in May alone, says state police chief Comm M. Kumar.

Comm Kumar said that the losses suffered in such cases have increased by more than RM8mil this year compared to the same month last year.

“Between May 1 and 31 this year, we have received 423 commercial crime cases compared to 273 cases last year. This is an increase of 150 cases, or 55%, compared to the previous year.

“Meanwhile, in terms of losses, the number has shot up to RM15.619mil, from only RM6.886mil last year.

“This means that the total value of losses suffered by victims has gone up by more than RM8mil or by 127%,” he said in a statement here on a statement on Sunday (June 2).

Comm Kumar said that of the over 400 cases received last month, most involved online ecommerce scams.

“A total of 373 cases, or 88% of the cases received, were online shopping scams. Meanwhile, the second-highest were investment scams, with 65 cases.

“Others include non-existent loan scams (45), phone scams (42), job scams (36) while the remaining 42 are other kinds of scams,” he said.

He urged the public to be careful and avoid easily falling for the tricks of online offers that promise high returns with low capital.
