KOTA KINABALU: Internet users have been urged to be more cautious in sharing information about the cost of goods as inaccurate information could cause unnecessary confusion among the public.
Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Ministry Sandakan branch chief enforcement officer Azdy Zukkry John said claims that a supermarket 2kg packet of cooking oil was selling at RM12.30, above the subsidised price was incorrect.
Following the claims, he said an enforcement team found that the cooking oil in 2kg packets was sold for RM12.30.
"The supermarket had put up a notice that the two-kilogram packet oil was not subsidised cooking oil," he said.
He said the supermarket had informed the enforcement team that it received the two-kilogram packet of cooking oil from a licensed cooking factory in the Lahad Datu district.
"The supermarket informed us that it will no longer sell cooking oil in packets or two-kilogram polybags to avoid consumer confusion about subsidised cooking oil," he said.
The government-subsidised cooking oil comes only in 1kg packets and is sold at RM2.30.
Azdy urged the public not to post unverified or inaccurate information on social media.
"The ministry also hopes that all traders, including online businesses, follow all guidelines and conditions, including selling controlled items subsidised at prices set by the government.
"They also reminded us that the price set for the controlled goods does not include delivery charges," he added.
Azdy urged the public to directly channel accurate and detailed complaints to the ministry through the official platforms provided for immediate action and curb any illegal irregular activities by traders.
