Rescued teenager dies after six hours battling for life


KOTA KINABALU: A teenager, who was earlier rescued from drowning at TMEC Recreation Centre in Ulu Kimanis, Papar, died, after six hours of battling for his life on Sunday.

The victim, Muhamad Haiqal Irwan, 18, was pronounced dead at 7:30pm while receiving treatment at the Papar district hospital.

Kimanis Fire and Rescue Services Station chief Mohd Johainin Ruslan said the victim was rescued by other picnickers and administered emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) before he was transported to the district hospital.

"He passed away while receiving treatment," he said.

Earlier, the victim was swept away by a strong current while swimming with his family at TMEC Recreation Center, Ulu Kimanis, at around 11am.

He was successfully rescued, but unconscious, and was rushed to the hospital for further treatment.
