Boost for special education with 50 construction projects

PUTRAJAYA: The Education Ministry is implementing 50 projects involving the construction of additional Special Education Integrated Programme (PPKI) buildings across the country, says Deputy Education Minister Wong Kah Woh.

More than 1,925 students with special educational needs are expected to benefit from the approved project, slated to be complete by 2026 or 2027.

“The Education Ministry will continue working to ensure that special education needs are met at the primary, secondary, and vocational college levels,” he added, noting that the 50 projects are part of the 12th Malaysia Plan (RMK-12).

Under the RMK-12 long-term plan and in response to the increasing number of students with special educational needs, all new primary schools will feature six PPKI classrooms, while secondary schools will include five PPKI classrooms.

"A total of 44 new mainstream schools are set to benefit 1,995 students with special needs through the construction of 288 PPKI classes," he mentioned after a Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) convocation ceremony for students with special educational needs.

Additionally, to support Technical Vocational Education Training (TVET), a new vocational college education secondary school (SMPKV) is under construction in Padawan, Sarawak. This facility will offer various relevant skill courses and is designed to serve 320 students. It is expected to be fully operational by 2026 and will include standard learning spaces and sufficient dormitories.
