Duo claim trial to cheating woman over 'Datuk' title

MELAKA: Two men have claimed trial in the Sessions Court here to a charge of soliciting a RM47,000 bribe to help secure a state title.

Government department clerical assistant Razizam Ali, 42, and contractor Low Kia Seng, 58, pleaded not guilty before Sessions judge Elesabet Paya Wan on Tuesday (June 4).

According to the charge sheet, they had a common intention to allegedly deceive one Seet Xiang Lin, 38, into believing she would be a recipient of the Darjah Pangkuan Seri Melaka (DPSM) award, which carries the title "Datuk".

Seet had handed over a total of RM47,000 between Jan 1, 2017 and Nov 30, 2018 by depositing the money into Low's bank account.

The charge was framed under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years and whipping upon conviction.

DPP Mohamad Azriff Firdaus Mohamad Ali from the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) prosecuted while Low was represented by Mohamad Kamarulzaman Jusoh and Razizam by Azrul Zulkifli Stork.

The court granted Low bail of RM30,000 with one surety and RM15,000 without surety to Razizam.

Both accused were also directed to report to the MACC office here once a month until the end of proceedings.

July 5 was fixed for next mention.
