Overflow on Cameron Highlands road due to clogged sewers, says JKR

IPOH: Water is overflowing onto the road at KM79 of FT59 near Kampung Raja, Cameron Highlands due to clogged sewers, says the Cameron Highlands Public Works Department (JKR).

It said that the sewers have been clogged since April 3, and added that this has caused water to spill over onto the road.

"Clean-up work has started. We will also clear the rubbish and rocks on the road, put up signs and manage the traffic flow, cordon off the affected area and repair the damage to the road and sidewalk," it said.

"As for the short term measures, the irrigation system near the farms there will be diverted to the drains by the roadside. A small sewer will be built near the farms," added JKR.

JKR also said it would continue to conduct more clean-up work, weather permitting.

"We will also clean the inlet and sewer using horizontal directional drilling and the outlet of the sewer using a compressor breaker method. We will also build a bund to direct the flow of river water to the nearby drains," it added.

A one-minute video clip which shows water flowing down a road, has gone viral on social media.

On this, JKR also advised motorists to be careful when using the road, especially during heavy rain

"Road users are also urged to adhere to the road signs at the location and instructions that would be issued from time to time to prevent untoward incidents," it said.

Meanwhile, Regional Environmental Awareness Cameron Highlands (REACH) president A. Dilip Martin warns of the possibility of a landslide there.

"The water that is flowing down the road will also cause the soil by the side of the road to give way. A landslide could occur due to this," he said.
