Panel to monitor fake news

Fahmi: Efforts to help the people must not be twisted

NIBONG TEBAL: The government is considering setting up a special committee to prevent the spread of fake news during the upcoming Sungai Bakap by-election, says Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.

He said it was important that any misinformation that belittled the efforts of the Federal Government aimed at helping the people was stopped.

“We will do it for the upcoming by-election,” he said after the Sembang Santai Programme with Komuniti Madani chiefs here yesterday.

Fahmi, who is also the unity government spokesman, said that a team from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) and Information Department would be monitoring what was being said during the polls.

He denied that the government was making sweet promises to the people, especially during the upcoming by-election.

Fahmi said he called on the Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ahmad Fuzi Abdul Razak at his residence in Seri Mutiara and also took the opportunity to meet the people.

He pointed out that the presence of federal ministers was not an issue as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim had instructed ministers to go to the ground to help solve problems faced by the people.

“So, I took the opportunity to see and listen to some complaints from the community,” Fahmi added.

He also said the government would continue to give its best to the people.

Earlier, he spent an hour with the Komuniti Madani chiefs at a cafe in Nibong Tebal.

Among the grouses and complaints raised during the discussion were flooding and water shortages in Sungai Bakap.
