Cops to record statement from caterer and others

PETALING JAYA: The caterer and all relevant parties will be asked to give their statements to the police in the probe on the food poisoning case related to a Gombak school that left two dead.

Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said that apart from the caterer, the event’s management personnel and school teachers would be called in.

“I have also been informed that the Health Ministry has closed down the related canteen,” he said, adding that the police were also awaiting the results of the lab tests.

The police were also establishing the total number of people affected by the incident, he told the media at the state police contingent headquarters in Shah Alam yesterday.

Earlier in the day, Gombak OCPD Asst Comm Noor Ariffin Mohamad Nasir said in a statement that a teenager and a toddler had died after falling sick from eating food linked to an event at a school in Gombak.

The programme, hosted at the school in Sungai Cincin, has also stricken dozens of teachers.

ACP Noor Ariffin said the first death involved a 17-year-old boy after his mother had brought back food from the school event on June 8.

“After eating the food, the victim and both his parents had diarrhoea.

“On June 10, the victim fell unconscious.

“He was pronounced dead by medical officers at Hospital Kuala Lumpur,” he said.

The second case, he said, involved a girl who was about two years old.

“Her father, who works as a security guard at the school, also brought food back on June 8 and gave it to the child. On June 10, the victim’s mother saw that she had developed a fever, was vomiting and also suffering from diarrhoea.

“The little girl was pronounced dead while receiving treatment at Hospital Selayang,” he said.

Both bodies have been handed over to the Selayang Hospital’s Forensics Department for further action.

Police have classified the case as sudden death and the Health Ministry was also informed of the cases.

Those with information on the incident are urged to contact Gombak police station chief Insp Heirme Che Mad at 014-238 9151, investigating officer Insp Khalpna Rajandhiran at 012-501 8901 or the Gombak police headquarters’ operation room hotline at 03-6126 2222.

According to Sinar Harian, the caterer in question has been instructed by the Selangor Islamic Religious Department to halt supplying food.
