Police seize over 60kg of cannabis, arrest suspected trafficker in Iskandar Puteri

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The police have arrested a suspected drug trafficker, and seized over 60kg of cannabis worth more than RM200,000.

Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan said the 28-year-old man was arrested at about 2.30pm on Saturday (June 8) by the police's motorcycle patrol unit (URB) in the Horizon Hills area.

"The unemployed suspect allegedly transported the drugs from another state into Johor and was attempting to distribute them to smaller drug suppliers and users here.

"However, the suspect's attempt was foiled when our URB noticed his suspicious driving behaviour.

"Upon inspection of the car, we found 60 packets of cannabis weighing 63.48kg, worth about RM210,150," he said, adding that the drugs could feed the addiction of some 64,000 users.

ACP Kumarasan said the suspect also tested positive for cannabis but did not have any prior criminal records.

"Preliminary investigations indicate that the syndicate has been active since January this year.

"It is believed that this was the suspect's second delivery, for which he received payment ranging between RM2,000 and RM5,000 per trip," he said.

He added that the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and whippings, upon conviction.

"The suspect is being remanded for seven days until Saturday (June 15). We have also identified another suspect, a 30-year-old local man, who is still at large," he revealed.

In an unrelated case, ACP Kumarasan said the police had thwarted an attempt to smuggle some RM98,000 worth of untaxed alcohol.

"The alcohol was found in the car driven by two suspects at about 3.20am on Wednesday (June 13).

"There were about 167 cartons of beers of various brands in the car that are believed to be untaxed," he said, adding that the beers and unpaid taxes are estimated to be about RM98,302.

He further stated that the two local men, aged 35 and 42, have previous records related to drugs and other crimes.

The suspects are currently remanded for 12 days until June 24 for investigations under Section 135(1)(d) of the Customs Act 1967, said ACP Kumarasan.
