Four fishermen still missing after boat sank

BATU PAHAT: Four fishermen are still missing while another was found safe after their boat capsized approximately 6.8 nautical miles south-west of Tanjung Segenting near here yesterday.

Malaysian Maritime Enforce-ment Agency (MMEA) director, maritime Commander Mohd Hanis Mohd Yunus said that the boat was overturned by large waves at about 6am with five fishermen, aged between 43 and 63, onboard.

The MMEA, through its Johor Baru Maritime Rescue Sub-Centre (MRSC), had activated search and rescue operations after being alerted by the public, reported Bernama.

“The fishing boat went to sea to fish but rough weather and large waves caused it to capsize and sink.

“The Johor Baru MRSC activated the search and rescue operation at 9am and dispatched a patrol boat from the Batu Pahat Maritime Zone,” he said in a statement yesterday.

One of the fisherman, a 43-year-old, was rescued by another fishing boat and brought to the Batu Pahat Maritime Zone Jetty before being taken to the Sultanah Nora Ismail Hospital for treatment.

“The search operation has been expanded with an increased radius of 23 square nautical miles.

“The Marine Police Force, the Malaysian Fire and Rescue Department, as well as the Civil Defence Force are assisting in the operation,” he added.
