Cops on the ball in tackling Islamic State threat, says Home Minister

KUALA LUMPUR: The police are on the ball in tackling the threat posed by the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, says Home Minister says Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail.

He said that the police are at a constant state of readiness to combat any terrorist threat, especially the Counter-Terrorism Division (E8).

"It (IS) is still around but the police have managed to cripple their plans. The security forces are always ready to act against any threat to the country and its people," he told reporters after launching the National Science Symposium on Drug Addiction on Wednesday (June 26).

Among those present were Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain and National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) deputy director-general Khairul Anwar Bachok.

It was reported that police have thwarted security threats against His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, and the Prime Minister after arresting eight people with suspected links to extremist ideologies.

The six men and two women aged between 25 and 70 were arrested in an operation over the weekend.

All were nabbed under the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act (Sosma) in Johor, Kelantan, Perak and Selangor.

Those arrested were suspected of having links to IS, and the arrests were follow-ups from previous operations conducted on May 15, 17 and 30.
