JOHOR BARU: Driving without a licence is the most common offence recorded by the Road Transport Department (JPJ) in a special operation held in conjunction with Hari Raya Aidiladha.

Johor JPJ director Azmil Zainal Adnan said the department was carrying out the special operation statewide from June 10 until June 30 to minimise accidents and road deaths during the festive season.

“As of Wednesday (June 26), we have inspected a total of 90,280 vehicles and issued 14,536 summonses for various offences.

“Of that, 3,691 or 26% were for failure to obtain a driving license.

“Most of the offenders without a license were motorcyclists,” he said in a press conference held during the operation at Skudai toll plaza (southbound) here on Wednesday.

Azmil added that the reason commonly given for not having a driving licence was that it was due to financial problems.

“This is just an excuse. JPJ has carried out MyLesen programme where the government helps the public, in particular, those in the B40 group to get a driving license.

“If they cannot afford to get a license, then they should come to register for the programme to get a Malaysian driving license,” he said.

Azmil added that other offences recorded were failure to renew their road tax, which is about 2,551 (18%) and 2,238 (16%) for not having insurance coverage.

He said the department also seized 360 vehicles for being unsafe on the road either due to illegal modifications or not having insurance.

Azmil added that JPJ would not compromise with any individual including companies and vehicle owners for going against the law and road rules.
