Five charged with activities linked to terrorist cell

PETALING JAYA: Five people including a married couple have been brought to courts in Johor and Kuala Lumpur for terrorism-linked charges. They were accused of supporting terror group IS through social media accounts and keeping materials linked to the group.

In the first case in the Segamat Sessions Court, unemployed Hasbullah Hassan, 45, is facing two counts of supporting and having in his possession materials linked to the terrorist group, namely videos, photographs and items related to the conduct of the group.

Hasbullah is also accused of supporting IS by promoting the group on a Facebook account bearing his name.

The offence was allegedly committed at the Special Branch Counter-Terrorism Division (E8) of the police headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, at 9am on March 23 last year.

No plea was recorded as the case falls under the jurisdiction of the High Court, Bernama reported.

For the second charge, Hasbullah allegedly had in his possession IS materials in Jalan Teratai Dua, Felda Palong Timur Tiga, Batu Anam, Segamat, at 12.30pm on May 30 this year.

Sessions judge Rahimah Abd Majid set July 24 for mention and submission of expert reports. No bail was offered to the accused, in accordance with Section 13 of the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma).

Deputy public prosecutor Siti Hajar Mat Radzi appeared for the prosecution, while the accused was unrepresented.

In JOHOR BARU, Sinar Harian reported that Muhammad Feesol Haron, 35, and his wife, Suhaini Sarwan, 46, were charged in the Sessions Court with possession of materials linked to IS and terrorist acts on their mobile phones.

They allegedly committed the offence at a factory in the Kempas Industrial Park at around 1.10pm and 1.15pm on May 30.

Another accused Mohd Firdaus Kamal Intdzam, 37, was charged with committing the same offence in front of a factory in Jalan Perniagaan Setia 6, Taman Perniagaan Setia, at around 6.15pm on May 30.

Suhaini meanwhile faces two more charges of supporting IS via two Facebook accounts under the names of “Suhaini Sarwan” and “Enma Kenma”.

The offence was allegedly committed at the Special Branch’s counter-terrorism division in Kuala Lumpur at 5.50pm, May 27.

Sessions Court judge Che Wan Zaidi Che Wan Ibrahim set July 30 for mention and to allow time for the appointment of lawyers.

In KUALA LUMPUR, restaurant worker Muhammad Muzzammil Mohd Mohlis, 35, was charged with three counts of terrorism-related offences.

Muhammad Muzzammil is accused of supporting IS by using a Facebook account bearing the name of Ibn Nuhas and on Telegram bearing the name of Wilayah Maliziyah (Arabic) at the Special Branch-Counter Terrorism Division (E8), at Bukit Aman here, at 4.50pm, on May 31.

He is also accused of keeping articles and videos related to IS at the same location, date, and time.

Furthermore, he is alleged to have admitted to being a member of the IS group by performing a bai’ah ceremony with the group leader, Abu Hafs AL Hashimi Al-Qurashi, to support the terrorist group.

Sessions Court judge Fadzlin Suraya Mohd Suah set Aug 29 for mention.
