Singaporean held over tax evasion case

Grave matter: The suspect being held for allegedly bribing enforcement agency officers to import items without paying taxes.

PETALING JAYA: A Singaporean man has been arrested for bribing officers from an enforcement agency to induce them not to impose taxes on imported goods.

It is learnt that the man was arrested at the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) headquarters in Putrajaya on Monday after he was summoned to give his statement on a case where he had allegedly given bribes to avoid paying taxes for items imported by his company.

“The suspect is believed to have committed the offence between 2022 and 2024.

“Preliminary investigations showed that he had paid off enforcement agency officers in cash.

“It is believed that 11 officers were involved to date,” said a source.

Yesterday, the man, who is in his 40s, was ordered by the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court to be remanded until Sunday.

When contacted, MACC investigation division senior director Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hashim confirmed the matter.

He added that investigations are being conducted under Sections 16(a) and 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
