Cops quiz Sabah activist under Sedition Act

KOTA KINABALU: Activist Mukmin Nantang, who had been vocal on issues concerning the Palau and Bajau Laut communities among others recently, was brought in by police for questioning under the Sedition Act 1948.

He was released on police bail at 1.20pm Thursday (June 27), about two hours after he arrived to give his statement to Semporna police.

Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Jauteh Dikun confirmed that Mukmin was brought in for questioning and released on police bail after the statement was recorded, adding that the probe was related to the issue of squatter homes.

It is believed that Mukmin, the founder of NGO Borneo Komrad, was brought in over online comments about the recent eviction of Bajau Laut from their settlement in Semporna.

In that operation, hundreds of illegal Palau and Bajau Laut community houses were destroyed as they were reportedly built on state land gazetted for marine parks.

When contacted, Mukmin said he was called in to facilitate a probe under the Sedition Act over a TikTok video that linked him with the Bajau Laut community.

“That video does not belong to me. I cannot specify which video this is because it will affect investigations,” he said, citing his lawyer’s advice.
