QuickCheck: Is a Cabinet minister being impersonated online?

WHEN it comes to investment opportunities, it is only logical that those that seem to have the endorsement of authority figures such as Cabinet ministers would draw more people to them.

This is due to the added air of credibility that would come with the support of such personalities.

Recently, an account claiming to share information about new investment opportunities is also saying that it is the official account of the Investment, Trade and Industry Minister.

Is this a legitimate account of a Cabinet minister?

VERDICT:

FALSE

In a statement posted on its official account, the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry said that the account which claims to be that of the Minister is in fact false.

"This account is uploading posts about fake investments to trick the public. The Ministry has taken immediate action to address the issue and protect the community from being involved in such fraud," it said.

The ministry added that it urges all social media users to always be vigilant of false news and only follow official accounts.

"Report any suspicious account and stay informed. Do not be involved," it added.

Meanwhile, a check of the account found that it states that it belongs to someone calling themselves "Ahmad Muhammad, Minister of Investment, Trade and Industry".

The actual Investment, Trade and Industry Minister is in fact Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz.
