Court orders mental health check for attacker

JEMPOL: A 20-year-old accused of stabbing his mother has been ordered by the Magistrate’s Court in Bahau to undergo psychiatric evaluation.

Magistrate Norshazwani Ishak made the order following an application by deputy public prosecutor Farahidah Zool Beri.

“The prosecution has been made to understand that the accused suffers from mild depression.

“We hereby ask the court to have the accused referred to a hospital for a mental evaluation before a confession is recorded,” she said.

The accused was to face a charge of injuring his 48-year-old mother at a house in Felda Raja Alias 1, Bandar Seri Jempol, around 12.50pm on June 22.

He faces a charge under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, which carries a jail term of up to 10 years, a fine or whipping, or any two of the three punishments, upon conviction.

Norshazwani then ordered the accused to be sent to Hospital Permai in Johor for a one-month observation period.
