District police chief to the rescue

KOTA KINABALU: An elderly couple trapped in the Penampang floods could not have asked for a better person to save them when the district police chief came personally to lend a hand.

Supt Sammy Newton and his men were checking out the flood situation in Kampung Kolopis, one of the worst-hit areas, when they spotted a four-wheel vehicle that had plunged into a hole with its rear pointing to the sky at 6.30am yesterday.

He said two people in their 60s were in the truck.

When they arrived, the woman was at the back of the truck and her husband was still trapped inside, he added.

“We waded through the waist-high water to free the man and help him to safer grounds. Then, we headed back for the woman.

“She could not stand or walk on her own, so I carried her on my back,” he said when contacted.

Supt Sammy said the couple were sent to the temporary flood relief shelter at the Penampang Cultural Centre.
