PETALING JAYA: The Youth and Sports Ministry is studying the feasibility of Malaysia hosting the SEA Games 2027.
"As such, the ministry held engagements with stakeholders such as state governments and corporate bodies on June 6," said Minister Hannah Yeoh in a parliamentary written reply on Thursday (June 27).
She was responding to a question by Chong Zhemin (Pakatan Harapan-Kampar) about whether Malaysia would host the South-East Asian sporting event.
"The decision will be made by the Cabinet after considering all aspects, including the impact on the economy," she said.
Yeoh had reportedly mentioned in June that hosting the SEA Games in 2027 could cost the government more than RM700mil.
This estimate is based on the costs incurred when Malaysia last hosted the biennial event in 2017.
The SEA Games Federation (SEAGF) Council unanimously agreed in May 2022 to award hosting rights to Malaysia, which has hosted the Games six times: in 1965, 1971, 1977, 1989, 2001, and 2017.
