SEREMBAN: A 44-year-old lorry driver facing the gallows for drug trafficking has been acquitted and discharged by the High Court here.

In delivering her judgment, Justice Rohani Ismail said the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case against Syafri Hamzah.

"After perusing the evidence before the court, the court hereby acquits and discharges the accused without calling for his defence.

"The court finds that the prosecution has failed to establish a prima facie case against the accused," she said at the end of the prosecution's case on Friday (July 5).

Syafri had been charged with trafficking 4.09kg of ecstasy pills around 10.30pm on April 23 at an apartment in Bandar Baru Nilai.

He was charged under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same legislation.

Justice Rohani then advised Syafri to be careful when picking his friends in the future.

"I would also like to advise you not to bring strangers to your house," she said.

Daniel Savarimuthu appeared for the accused while Mohd Hadi Hakimi Harun prosecuted.
