KUALA LUMPUR: Friday prayers at the Surau Nurul Ikhlas in Seri Kembangan produced a surprise for many.

Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim was among those who showed up to perform the obligatory prayers yesterday.

Accompanying the Prime Minister was Selangor Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari.

Just before prayers began, those gathered had another surprise when Indonesian celebrity Islamic preacher Ustaz Abdul Somad Batubara turned up to join the congregation.

It is learnt that Abdul Somad, who is in the country to give a series of talks, was invited to attend the prayers.

After the prayers, Anwar spent several minutes greeting those at the surau.

Many were seen trying to shake Anwar’s hand with others whipping out their phones to record the moment.

Abdul Somad was later spotted leaving the surau together with Anwar in his official car.

Earlier before the prayers, the Prime Minister stopped at Restoran Singgah Rassa near the surau to have lunch, much to the surprise of several patrons.
