Driver dies in head-on collision, other escapes unhurt

KOTA KINABALU: A road accident involving a head-on collision between two vehicles has claimed the life of a 33-year-old man in Tawau.

The victim, identified as Tsen Yeak Yang, was extracted from his car by firefighters after being pinned inside. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Tawau district fire station chief Jemishin Ujin said they received an alert at 2.01am and promptly dispatched a team of nine firefighters who arrived at the scene in Taman Gaya, Jalan Kuhara, four minutes later.

“His body has been handed over to the police for further action,” he said yesterday.

Tawau district police chief Asst Comm Jasmin Hussin said initial investigations revealed that the collision occurred as Tsen was heading towards Fujimart from Taman May Flower.

His vehicle collided with another car driven by a 19-year-old travelling from Taman Semarak towards Tawau town.

“The two cars collided in the middle of the intersection after the traffic light, causing the victim’s car to swerve 155m to the left shoulder of the road, while the teenager’s car spun, hit a pole and skidded 105m into the opposite lane,” said ACP Jasmin.

He said the teenager escaped unhurt.
