Lorry driver on drug trafficking charge freed

SEREMBAN: A 44-year-old lorry driver possibly facing the gallows for drug trafficking has been freed by the High Court without his defence being called.

Justice Rohani Ismail decided that the prosecution had failed to prove a prima facie case against Syafri Hamzah.

“After perusing the evidence before the court, the court hereby acquits and discharges the accused without calling for his defence.

“The court finds that the prosecution has failed to establish a prima facie case against the accused,” she said at the end of the prosecution’s case.

Syafri was charged with trafficking 4.09kg of Ecstasy pills around 10.30pm on April 23 at an apartment in Bandar Baru Nilai.

He was charged under Section 39B (1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act.

Rohani then advised Syafri to be careful when he picks his friends in the future.

“I would also like to advise you not to bring strangers to your house,” she said.

Daniel Savarimuthu appeared for the accused while Mohd Hadi Hakimi Harun prosecuted.
