Man loses RM400k in crypto scam

BATU PAHAT: A 64-year-old man lost more than RM400,000 in a cryptocurrency investment scheme.

Batu Pahat acting OCPD Supt Shahrulanuar Mushaddat Abdullah Sani said the retiree got to know a person on Facebook in March.

After several interactions, the victim was enticed to invest in a digital currency programme via kakauet.com, which he later found out to be non-existent.

“The victim provided his details on the platform and was assured of substantial returns.

“He then transferred a total of RM400,900 to eight different bank accounts for the investment from April 3 to June 18,” Supt Shahrulanuar said in a statement here yesterday.

He said the victim later received a message, claiming that the United States Department of Treasury had seized his investment account and that he needed to pay 3% of the total money invested for his account to be released.

“Sensing foul play, the victim did not pay the money,” he said.
