PETALING JAYA: Employers should view occupational safety and health positively as they enhance workplace safety, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye (pic).

The Alliance for Safe Community founder and chairman said that creating a safer working environment would boost productivity and employee morale.

He said increasing awareness and publicity of the Occupational Safety and Health Act (Osha) Amendment 2022 should be a priority.

He proposes that the Human Resources Ministry develop a strategy for promoting occupational safety and health (Osh) coordinator courses.

“The whole government should be involved in improving and promoting safety at the workplace,” he said.

Since June 1, the implementation of the Osha amendments has required any workplace with five or more employees to train an Osh coordinator.

“These Osh coordinator courses are important, as they will contribute towards greater safety at the workplace.

“If we can have a safe working environment, then we can reduce the number of workplace accidents and work towards zero accidents,” he said.

He adds that employers should view Osh training as a small investment in ensuring productivity, quality, customer and employee confidence, a skilled workforce, and a safety culture in the workplace.

Moreover, he said that employees’ work morale would increase, contributing to greater productivity and increased profit for employers.

He also called upon the Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers, the Malaysian Employers Federation, and the Malaysian Trades Union Congress to lend their support in promoting awareness of the Osha amendments among employees and employers.
