We’ll work harder, say DAP and Amanah after Sg Bakap defeat

PETALING JAYA: DAP respects the voters’ choice in the Sungai Bakap by-election and will strive to do better, says its parliamentary leader Nga Kor Ming.

“As a political party driven by ideals and missions, DAP will continue to unwaveringly support Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim in promoting reforms and implementing policies that benefit the nation and its people,” said the party whip, who is also the Housing and Local Government Minister, in a statement yesterday.

Nga added that DAP’s 40 MPs will continue to connect with communities on the ground to better understand public opinion from various perspectives.“DAP will continue dedicating itself to pursuing political achievements and earning the people’s trust while preparing for the next general election,” he said.Likewise, Amanah has also accepted the result of the Sungai Bakap by-election, with its president Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, affirming the party’s commitment to strengthening the people’s support for the unity government. In a Bernama report, Mohamad said the unity of the machinery between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional also needs to be fortified in facing future elections.

“Amanah respects the results of the Sungai Bakap by-election with full confidence that continuous efforts will be mobilised by (the party) to boost the people’s support for the unity government.

“Amanah would like to say a million thanks to all the party workers at all levels who have given their full commitment throughout the campaign period,” Mohamad said in a brief statement.

On Saturday, Perikatan Nasional retained Sungai Bakap after its candidate, Abidin Ismail, defeated Pakatan’s Dr Joohari Ariffin with a 4,267-vote majority. The by-election was held following the death of incumbent Nor Zamri Latiff, who was also Nibong Tebal PAS division chief, on May 24 following a stomach inflammation.
