KUALA LUMPUR: The Inspector-General of Police's assurance that the public's police service will not be disrupted despite the main gate to police stations closing after 10pm is welcomed, says Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.
The Alliance for a Safe Community chairman said Tan Sri Razarudin Husain's assurance and clarification were much needed.
"I am happy that it has been clarified. As we all know, the police work 24 hours a day and seven days a week. The public is used to this. The assurance has allayed public concerns that no police reports could be lodged at police stations after 10pm," he said when contacted on Thursday (July 11).
Lee also urged the government to increase security at all police stations in response to the attack on the Ulu Tiram police station on May 17.
"All necessary measures should be taken to further tighten security at all police stations," he said.
On Tuesday (July 9), the IGP announced that closing the front gates of police stations after 10pm would not disrupt its public service.
He said the measure would be fully implemented once the Bukit Aman Management Department completes the standard operating procedure (SOP) for the directive.
"For now, the directive is implemented at certain police stations in the outskirts and rural areas. These police stations have two officers on duty at night. One person is assigned to the security post, while another is assigned to the police report counter.
The IGP said the closing of the front gates of police stations does not mean it is not operational.
"It will still function normally with service delivery to the public a priority," he said.
