Influencer couple remain in custody after court dismisses application to review remand order

KUALA LUMPUR: An influencer couple who are implicated in donation money fraud remain under custody after the High Court here dismissed their application to set aside a remand order issued by the Putrajaya Magistrate’s Court.

Justice Muhammad Jamil Hussin rejected the application filed by Mohd Hazalif Mohd Hazani, 30, or better known as Alif Teega and his wife Aisyah Hijanah Azhari, 26, after finding that the lower court had adhered to Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code when it allowed a remand application by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).

The applicants had raised the issue of no nexus between them and the offence they were investigated for, which they claimed was without merit.

The court, however, was of the opinion that it could only be concluded after the investigation was completed.

“The MACC must be allowed to complete their investigation on the applicants and the remand order by the magistrate on the applicants is valid.

“Therefore, the application for a review is dismissed,” Justice Muhammad Jamil said.

Earlier, the couple’s lawyer Abd Rahim Ali argued that his clients had no link to any public entities when they were investigated in a public servant capacity.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Ahmad Akram Gharib said the review application was premature.

On Thursday (July 11), Magistrate Irza Zulaikha Rohanuddin allowed MACC’s application to detain Mohd Hazalif and Aisyah Hijanah for four days until July 14 over allegations of fraud using a donation platform known as JomDonate.
