MCMC lauds govt review for sterner action against cyberbullying

PUTRAJAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has welcomed the announcement by Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil that the government will review existing laws to address cyberbullying issues.

"This announcement sends a crucial signal that the government is committed and serious about tackling cyberbullying, which has led to loss of life.

"This step will also enable authorities to enforce the law more effectively and bring those involved to court, thereby providing appropriate justice for the affected individuals," it said in a statement on Saturday (July 13).

MCMC said the government will scrutinise laws including the Penal Code and the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 (CMA 1998), and will consider the need to draft or create new legislation to address cyberbullying issues.

The statement said MCMC and the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will review standard operating procedures (SOPs) to streamline the process of filing complaints related to cyberbullying.

It added that the MCMC and the Communications Ministry plan to organise a nationwide tour to disseminate information and modules on cyberbullying prevention to all levels of society.
