KUALA LUMPUR: The amount of losses from commercial crime cases, including online scams, has reached RM1.2bil this year, says Comm Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf.
The Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) director said between Jan 1 and July 7, a total of 15,500 commercial crime cases were recorded, an increase of 34% compared to the same period last year with 11,546 cases.
"The amount of losses also jumped significantly to RM1.2bil compared to last year, where the cases involved RM660,886 in losses," he said on Saturday (July 13).

While the increase in cases and losses has proved challenging for the department, Comm Ramli said the matter has been dealt with decisively with 5,559 investigation papers (IP) successfully prosecuted this year.
"It is an increase compared to last year where 2,218 IPs were prosecuted," he said.
The spike in commercial crime cases requires the commitment of all parties, including society, especially in the aspect of prevention, he said.
"Thus, we urge all segments of society to be alert and take part in various commercial crime prevention efforts," he said.
