Govt to provide RM100mil supplementary subsidy for Felda, says PM

SERDANG: A RM100mil allocation has been given to the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) to help subsidies additional operational costs following the rationalisation of diesel subsidies, says Datuk Seri Anway Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister made the announcement during the Felda Settlers’ Day 2024 celebration, which was held at the Malaysia Agro Exposition Park Serdang (Maeps), on Sunday (July 14).

“Considering additional financial implications of RM121.mil for Felda due to the rise in diesel prices, the government will provide additional subsidies of around RM100mil to Felda to cover additional operational costs.

“This is to ensure that the income of Felda settlers is not affected,” said Anwar.

Anwar said Felda settlers are always welcomed to discuss and negotiate issues with him and the government is always open to finding solutions.

“Let’s discuss a solution. If you criticise and scold me, I am even more reluctant to help out,” said Anwar.

At the same time, Anwar also announced an additional RM31.7mil allocation for 317 Felda settlements under the Sejahtera Komuniti Madani programme.

“The community is given the freedom to decide on sectors to focus on, such as agriculture and food, sewing and handicrafts, herbs and health, tourism and hospitality, as well as green activities and recycling. I hope this initiative will have a positive impact on the Felda community,” said Anwar.

Anwar also said Putrajaya will look into ways to assist Felda settlers who are still driving “kereta sapu” (cars without road tax) in settlements.

Meanwhile, Anwar said rationalising subsidies is one move that is feared by all previous administrations, as public disgruntlement could translate into a prime minister’s unpopularity.

“We can still foot the subsidies, but tens of billions of ringgit will end up in the pockets of foreigners and the rich,” said Anwar.

Anwar also said the recently released Auditor General’s report had revealed irregularities in Felda.

“Stern action will be taken to save this country,” said Anwar.

The A-G’s report had revealed Felda suffered an after-tax loss of RM1.005bil.

Diesel prices are RM3.35 per litre effective June 10 in Peninsular Malaysia, while the price remains at RM2.15 per litre at Sabah, Sarawak and Labuan.
