British MP gets sworn in on the Gita


A NEWLY-elected MP in Britain has attracted attention by getting sworn in on the Bhagavad Gita, the Hindu holy book.

Malaysia Nanban reported that Shivani Raja, a British citizen whose parents are from Gujarat, India, stood as a Conservative Party candidate.

The 29-year-old businesswoman won the East Leicester constituency by beating Rajesh Agarwal in the seat that had been held by the Labour Party for 37 years.

MPs are allowed to choose their own text to take their oath of office and Shivani chose the Gita.

The Devasthanam board manages the Batu Caves Sri Subramaniam Temple and Kortumalai Pillaiyar Temple along with the Mariamman Temple.

Board chairman Tan Sri R. Nadarajah said the temple committee has constantly faced mudslinging and baseless accusations over the years. The board has been functioning under court orders and its funds must be utilised for religious activities such as poojas and ceremonies, and temple upkeep, he was quoted as saying.
