KOTA KINABALU: Plans are in the works to enhance heritage tourism in Sabah.
Finding Jesselton author George Jessel proposed a collaboration with the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) during a recent meeting and the state has welcomed the idea.
Jessel expressed his interest in opening a dedicated gallery showcasing the history of Jesselton (Kota Kinabalu) and the North Borneo Company during a meet-up in London on Monday (July 15).
According to a statement by STB on Tuesday (July 16), the meeting emphasised the necessity of finding a suitable location to house the gallery.
Jessel also proposed seeking funding from the British government to support the initiative.
"The history of the North Borneo Company is a significant part of our shared heritage, and we must have a dedicated space to celebrate and educate the public about this important era," the statement quoted him as saying.
STB chief executive officer Julinus Jimit welcomed the suggestion, as the initiative aligns with its goals of promoting heritage and educational tourism in the state.
He said showcasing Sabah’s unique history and culture would undoubtedly attract more tourists and provide invaluable educational opportunities, especially for the younger generation.
"The STB is eager to explore further collaboration opportunities with Jessel and British stakeholders,” said Julinus.
He added that this collaboration could strengthen cultural ties and attract more visitors from the United Kingdom to Sabah.
Jessel's book tells of his search to find out why a trading post in the South China Sea was named after his great-grandfather Charles Jessel, a former vice-chairman of the North Borneo Company.
