Fugitive mat rempit fined and jailed for reckless riding

MELAKA: A fugitive mat rempit was fined RM5,000 and sentenced to a day in jail by the magistrate's court in Ayer Keroh after pleading guilty to reckless riding in 2017.

Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman handed out the sentence to Khairul Izuan Kamaruddin, 31, under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 during the proceedings on Tuesday (July 16).

The offence carries a maximum imprisonment of up to two years and a fine of up to RM15,000.

Khairul Izuan, who is self-employed, was first detained on June 11, 2017.

However, he went missing and failed to appear in court for seven years until he was apprehended in Taiping, Perak, on Monday (July 15).

According to the case facts, Khairul Izuan was found guilty of riding a motorcycle in a manner that endangered other road users along Lebuh Sungai Udang-Paya Rumput-Ayer Keroh (SPA) near Stadium Hang Jebat seven years ago.

The offence occurred at 3.45am on June 11, 2017, when Khairul Izuan and two other motorcyclists performed dangerous stunts and zigzagged from the Bertam Ulu overpass through Lebuh SPA to Stadium Hang Jebat before turning back towards Bertam Ulu.

All three were apprehended the same day.

Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor Inspector Naim Abdul Jalil proposed that Khairul Izuan be given harsher punishment due to the severity of the offence.

Khairul Izuan, who was unrepresented, appealed for leniency, citing his need to return to his hometown in Taiping in 2017 to care for his sick parents and disabled sister.

The court also disqualified Khairul Izuan from holding a "B2" motorcycle licence for five years.

He later paid the fine.
