AN Opposition lawmaker was suspended from the House for three days for refusing to retract his statement, accusing a government backbencher of being anti-Islam.
The issue began when RSN Rayer (PH-Jelutong) accused Datuk Awang Hashim (PN-Pendang) of disrespecting the House by cussing at the six former Bersatu MPs during yesterday’s proceedings.
“As a Muslim MP representing Pendang, contesting under a PAS ticket, it is not good to ‘damn’ the six MPs who backed the government,” said Rayer.
Deputy Speaker Datuk Ramli Mohd Nor, who was chairing the session, told Rayer to be more specific in his remarks.
Instead, Awang responded: “He is anti-Islam.”
Rayer then told Awang to retract his statement.
Awang claimed that Rayer was against Islam because the DAP MP is supportive of gambling activities in Kedah, despite Muslims making over 70% of the state’s population.
“This means that he is anti-Islam,” Awang said.
Several backbencher MPs were seen standing in support of Rayer, asking for the Pendang MP to retract his remarks.
“This is a very serious accusation,” said Sim Tze Tzin (PH-Bayan Baru).
Ramli intervened and told the MPs to keep quiet and be mindful of their behaviour as there were guests observing parliamentary proceedings.
“Look up there. Is this what we want to portray to the public? YB, please retract your words,” Ramli said, referring to the public gallery.
Awang’s attempt to explain himself was cut off by Ramli.
“I am sorry. I will not retract this word. Jelutong is anti-Islam,” said Awang.
Ramli then issued three warnings to Awang, before ordering the Sergeant-At-Arms to escort the lawmaker out of the House.
