RM90mil zakat goal through monthly salary deduction scheme

KUALA LUMPUR: The “Jom Potong 2024” campaign has been launched to encourage more Muslims to pay zakat through a monthly salary deduction scheme.

The six-month campaign was launched by the Federal Territories Islamic Religious Council - Zakat Collection Centre (PPZ-MAIWP) here yesterday.

PPZ-MAIWP chief executive officer Datuk Abdul Hakim Amir Osman (pic) said the campaign aims to collect a total of RM90mil from 7,000 zakat payers.

He emphasised that zakat payment through the scheme is crucial because it ensures the continuity of zakat distribution by PPZ-MAIWP to asnaf (those eligible to receive zakat) recipients in the Federal Territories, every month.

“Paying zakat through the monthly deduction scheme is highly encouraged because the distribution of zakat to asnaf, such as monthly financial assistance, depends entirely on this collection,” he said at the launch of the campaign, Bernama reported.

Abdul Hakim expressed optimism that this payment channel would remain popular among zakat payers due to its simplicity and systematic approach, and it could be adjusted with the monthly tax deduction.

He also highlighted that zakat payers were eligible for a 100% income tax rebate from the Inland Revenue Board, alongside automatic coverage under the Kafalah Muzakki Scheme, providing a death benefit of up to RM3,000.

“I encourage Muslims to seize this opportunity and take advantage of these benefits as it allows them to fulfil their responsibilities to both country and religion,” he added.

Abdul Hakim also said 250 zakat payers stand a chance to win attractive prizes, including umrah packages, electric motorcycles, massage chairs and airwheel luggage, through the campaign.

Zakat payers who are interested in participating can fill out the online form via ptg.zakat.com.my, with PPZ-MAIWP handling the salary deduction process directly with their employers.
