HULU SELANGOR: A smartphone, believed to be Nur Farah Kartini Abdullah’s (pic, below), was recovered from a ditch at an oil palm estate in Kampung Sri Keledang, Hulu Selangor, here.
The device was discovered by the Selangor police’s Forensic Sub Aquatic unit at about 12.21pm after diving for an hour yesterday.
Selangor police chief Comm Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said police believe the plantation was the prime crime scene for Nur Farah Kartini’s murder.
“We believe the incident occurred at Kampung Sri Keledang and was committed by one suspect.
“A team of police divers found a mobile phone in a ditch, believed to have been used by the victim.
“The police team will also perform a search at another location somewhere 20 minutes away, (to search for other belongings),” he told reporters at the scene.
Comm Hussein said the 26-year-old victim and the suspect knew each other, but police are still investigating the extent of their relationship.
“We are investigating the relationship, including the motive (of the murder),” he said.
Comm Hussein said police have recorded the statements in connection with the case.
“Among those were the victim’s friends and colleagues,” he said.
He also reminded the public not to speculate or spread any photo or information that might jeopardise the ongoing investigation.
He said no one should issue a statement that goes beyond the police investigation.
“There are many wild speculations about the discovery of the woman’s body at an oil palm estate in Kampung Sri Keledang,” he said.
Comm Hussein said action could be taken on those who spread misinformation under Section 233 of the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) Act 1998.
It was reported that the victim’s body was found at an oil palm plantation in Kampung Sri Keledang, Hulu Selangor, on July 15.
Nur Farah Kartini was reported missing in Tanjung Malim, Perak, on July 11.
She was reported missing after sending a rental car to a customer at Taman Universiti, Tanjung Malim.
A policeman, said to be her boyfriend, has since been detained and remanded for seven days.
The case is classified under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
A post mortem to determine the exact cause of death of Nur Farah Kartini is still pending lab results.
Comm Hussein said the post mortem was conducted at Hospital Sungai Buloh and that it lasted two and a half hours.
“The post mortem was conducted on July 16 by forensic pathologists at the Sungai Buloh hospital, starting at 3pm and ending at 5.30pm. The results of the post mortem is “pending laboratory investigation”.
“The police are still conducting investigations and urge any witness to present themselves to the nearest police station to assist with investigations,” he said.
