Man faces DUI charge after injuring traffic cop

JOHOR BARU: A restaurant supervisor was charged at a Magistrate’s Court here with driving under the influence of alcohol and injuring a traffic policeman.

Ng Wee Long, 34, pleaded not guilty to the charge read in Mandarin before Magistrate Nur Fatin Mohamad Farid here on Thursday (July 18).

According to the charge sheet, Ng allegedly drove a silver sedan while drunk along KM3.6 of Jalan Pantai, heading towards Permas Jaya at 7.05am on July 14.

This resulted in the injury of Koperal Mohamad Rasul Mohd Yusof.

The alcohol level in Ng’s blood was said to be 121mg per 100ml, which was 71mg more than the permitted level of 50mg per 100ml blood.

The charge was framed under Section 44(1A)(b) of the Road Transport Act 1987, punishable with a jail term of seven to 10 years and a fine of RM30,000 to RM50,000 and licence suspension upon conviction.

Prosecuting officer Insp S. Vikineswary asked the court to impose a bail of RM15,000 on the accused.

Ng, who works at a seafood restaurant, appealed for a lower amount as he has to take care of his parents.

Magistrate Nur Fatin allowed bail of RM9,000 with one surety and ordered Ng’s driving licence to be suspended until the end of the court proceedings. He also ordered him to report to the Plentong police station once a month.

The magistrate set Aug 25 for the next mention and documents submission and told Ng to appoint a lawyer.

It was earlier reported that the incident took place when the victim was conducting traffic control at the location.

The policeman was directing traffic from an unrelated car accident. While the vehicle involved was being towed away, another car—allegedly driven by the accused—made a sudden lane change.

Johor Baru South OCPD Asst Comm Raub Selamat reportedly said the policeman, who was standing at the left side of the tow truck, was thrown onto the front windscreen and then flung into the air before landing in the middle of the road.
