IPOH: Two Indonesians were detained by police with drugs worth more than RM340,000 at the Sungai Tiang jetty in Rungkup, near Bagan Datuk.
Perak police chief Comm Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said based on information received, a team from the Penang Marine Police intelligence (Wilayah Satu) unit arrested the two men, aged 42 and 46 years old, on July 15 at about 10pm.
He said about 10,610g of methamphetamine wrapped in transparent plastic packets was seized from the fibre boat belonging to the two men.
“We believe that the jetty was just a transit point, and the drugs are meant for distribution to another neighbouring country.
“Both men had valid documentation to enter the country via the proper sea channels. They have been in the country for a week.
“We believe this syndicate has been active for the past seven months, and have been using the sea route to smuggle drugs,” he told a press conference at the state police headquarters here Thursday (July 18).
Comm Azizi added that the police believed that the drugs were being brought in from the north, from countries bordering Malaysia, and were meant to be distributed to another neighboring country.
He said both the men have no previous criminal or drug records, but one of them tested positive for drugs.
“The drugs seized could be used by 106,100 drug addicts.
“The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and both the suspects have been remanded until July 22 for further investigations,” he added.
